Winter began with gigantic dumps of snow which took us through the Holidays.  Then, in mid-January, we had a long, milder spell during which some of the snow melted, and we even had some rain one day.  Usually we are then repaid by frigid temperatures and another snow dump.  While the cold weather returned (and Glen Lake froze about two weeks behind its average date), we’ve had lots of blue skies and sunshine, and very little snow.  Here along the lakeshore I think we’ve had about an inch since the thaw.

The good news is that there is snow in the forecast for today and tomorrow, so hopefully we’ll get the woods freshened up for snow shoeing and cross country skiing.

When Big Glen Lake froze, it froze amazingly clear, and here is a shot.  The ice is about 6″ thick, and those apparent ice floes are just little patches of wind-whipped snow.
