August 2009 News

Greetings, Coffee Lover!

What can I say? We’re having an outstanding summer in Glen Arbor. Sure, the weather has been a bit cooler and rainier, but not by a whole lot. The month of July is cooler on average than last year (65° versus 70°), but last year actually had more rain, and about an equal number of rainy days. You can make the comparisons yourself here, or look at historical averages. Like most parts of the country, weather is a hot topic, and we’re no exception.

The cafe has been buzzing with activity, and we are seeing lots of folks in town and in our shop. Perhaps some cooler weather has driven them off the beach and onto the patio, but our impression is that people are taking vacations closer to home, and they are definitely selecting Leelanau County. For instance, Steve reports that yesterday normally sleepy Northport was jammed with tourists. It’s a great thing, and we thank you all!

The Narrows Bridge reconstruction appears to be moving at a snail’s pace, and I’ve heard rumors of a Halloween opening. Driving all the way around the lakes is becoming tiresome. As such, I’ve barely been to Empire. I will be happy when our towns are finally reunited.

When we have questions about brewing coffee, we turn to our good friend at Bunn, Dr. Brew. Well, that’s his super-hero name: I am sworn to keep his true identity a secret. But I digress. Dr. Brew has a great post online about the mechanics and chemistry of brewing, and rather than quote him, I’ll give you this link. This should keep you coffee aficionados riveted. To the rest of you I’ll say that it’s about time to break out the vinegar and clean your coffee maker.

I’ve noticed a number of internet orders for gifts this month, and I’m passing that thought along. When you have a special someone who needs a very special gift, remember that we have some great packages online.

Have a wonderful August, and we look forward to seeing many of you over Labor Day Weekend!
