March 2009 News

Greetings, Coffee Lover!

It’s March already, and yet it feels like January.  A wicked winter storm was forecast for us last night, but it only got colder and a produced a couple of inches of snow as it blew by.  Apparently points east took the brunt.  Bottom line is that all of the usual winter activities will be available once again this weekend.  I always feel that if I make it through March then Spring is at-hand.  Granted, the trees do not leaf until the beginning of May, and over the years the cherry blossoms appear around May 8th.  Sixty days until then, and sixty days after that until July!

I’ll head to Florida the end of March to grab a little vitamin D, and help mom with her laptop.  Well, yes, I’ll also play golf and go out to dinner, but I wanted it to sound like it was purely altruistic.  John and Steve will be taking their families south to see their folks in Tennessee, and John will also head to the Carolinas.  Linda is going to give Disneyworld a whirl.  And then, April arrives and we prepare for the summer.

I enjoy March for the NCAA tournament, and suddenly my beloved University of Michigan has a slim chance to be invited.  We look forward to a strong performance by the mighty Spartans, and of course never hear any mention of Ohio State or Notre Dame…but why would we?  (Andy, you are welcome to voice your opinion on my blog; I reserve the right to employ guest editors).

Traditionally we’ve put Irish Cream on special for March.  With the new website I can do one better, and put ALL OF THE FLAVORS ON SALE at 10% off.  You’ll see that special pricing while you shop online.  It’s our little treat for you to get through these final days of winter.  With 19 flavors to choose from, I think you’ll find something to enjoy!

Rock with Barack blend coffee has been a smashing success, and since customers are re-ordering it, I’ll soon move it to a permanent selection.  For four years, with an option until 2016.

Finally, I have a green energy update.  Back in 2002 I changed our incandescent light bulbs in the cafe to compact fluorescent.  Recently, I’ve replaced a few of those bulbs with LED bulbs.  Not only has this improved the lighting and saved energy, it saves money.  My calculations show that before the switch, we used $1,100 per year in bulbs and electricity.  The compact fluorescent bulbs brought that cost down to $300.  If we were to change to all LED, that cost would plummet to $85.  That is not yet feasible, since we need more light output in some areas.  However, it demonstrates that when you burn your lights for 4,000 hours a year, there can be significant savings!  Find a few highly used lights in your home and see if you can make a switch.

Enjoy the Ides of March (and the other 30 days of the month)!

    Mr. Buhler -

Outstanding! My 10 lb order (I always order 10# for the free shipping – THANK YOU!) will be forth coming. Thanks for putting all flavors on sale. We are on the last pound (French Vanilla – I, personally, would keep Orange in reserve but this keeps my wife happy) and was hoping for a good sale.

I, like so many others, have been affected by the economy. I have lost a job of 16 years and have been fortunate to start a new career with a great company.

Bottom line is that every expense is looked at. Six months of unemployment will do that. I have fired my phone company (switched to ooma.com – check it out).

My wife & I both love your coffee. We are long time customers. Even so, we have no alternative but to look at cutting cost. We have cut expenses in areas we never dreamed of. But we love your coffee. We have stayed true to CoffeeGuys through thick and thin. You offer a great value. Your specials simply make it easier to enjoy a great cup of joe.

My wife, Melinda, and I say “God bless you and keep up the good work”. Every morning at 5:00 AM, there are two people in Auburn singing your praises!

One day, my wife & I will visit Leelanau Coffee and thank you personally. Until our kids get through college, this simple note will have to do.

Until then, know that your great coffee and specials are appreciated.

Squeaking by, with a great cup of coffee, in Indiana.

    Jerry and Melinda G.
